The Bridge, Navigation center of the ship, was usually manned by two officers and two helmsmen. All systems were in duplicate in case emergency. One privilege for the officers on the bridge, who often worked 90-hour weeks, was being allowed to order anything they wanted to eat while on watch. One morning the relief steersman went to the galley for the officers' food, he learned that the staff was unable to handle the order. It seemed that Jackie Gleason had ordered 285 club sandwiches for his party! (The SS United States, A Glimpse of A Bygone Era, by Richard O'Leary).
