At times it can be lonely, floating on the Atlantic Ocean halfway between two continents. You are a world away from familiar acquaintances ,sounds, sights, and  routines. This wonderful ship that you are traveling  on is surrounded by water and that’s all you see for days. So when another ship appears ahead of you on the horizon, it can be the major event of the day. That ship turned out to be the Queen Elizabeth, which at 83,000 tons was the world's largest liner.. The United States drew closer and passed her. It was a magnificent sight to see this stately liner at sea. The Queen Mary and Elizabeth maintained a friendly rivalry with The United States. On one crossing the Queen Elizabeth tried to catch up with the United States. The United States sped up and left the Queen behind, arriving in New York seven hours ahead of schedule

Winning a race was never a problem for the United States. She had massive power combined with lower weight, and a long sleek hull design. Her engines produced 241,785 shaft horsepower to move 53,290 tons , while the Queen's engines produced 158,000 shaft horsepower to move 83,000 tons.
