Stern on auction day October 1984 |
The trademark of a Gibbs & Cox design was a well rounded or " spoon" shaped stern. The area in white, just above the ships name, is the crew's covered promenade deck. The United States experienced stern vibration, especially in a following sea or following wind. The stern would lift up, and the props would not grab as much water, resulting in a shift in direction. Ships have there own personality, usually demonstrated in how they handle. The Big U was like a race horse, fast but a bit sensitive and skittish. At times she would get away from the helmsman- but would quickly respond to corrections. |
